Recession-Proof Industries
Where jobs can still be found
Researchers from FáS have identified areas where there are reasonable job prospects as the recession continues.
JOBS WITH HIGH TURNOVER
Even during a slowdown there is still a demand for recruits in jobs with a high turnover of staff. These include shop assistants, clerical workers, childcare, care for the elderly, catering, hairdressing, and security.
GROWTH AREAS IN THE DOWNTURN
Sales of second-hand goods, repair and maintenance, fast food, door-to-door selling, green energy.
SKILLS SHORTAGES
FAS has identified a few professions where there are skills shortages. They include: doctors, nurses, software engineers, accountants with expertise in regulation, technical sales representatives, IT specialists.
LONG-TERM DEMAND
FáS predicts that there will be long-term growth in many occupations requiring third-level qualifications. These include engineering, computing, science, and medical, legal and financial services. The fastest growth areas are likely to be in childcare and care for the elderly.
