Independent Colleges are offering students undertaking the three year BA (Hons) in Journalism and one year MA degrees in Journalism an internship at one of Independent News & Media PLC titles including The Irish Independent, The Sunday Independent and the Evening Herald.

The experiential learning module offered by Independent Colleges allows journalism students to work as part of the newspaper staff and develop a hands-on understanding of the process of news production. The assessed internships offer students the opportunity to further develop journalistic skills, preparing them for employment in media and journalism.

Commenting on the internship opportunity, Vincent Crowley, CEO of INM Ireland said, “Interns will be surrounded daily by a talented editing and writing team who will guide and direct them, with each intern assigned their own mentor. Interns may have the opportunity to conduct interviews and cover events, providing them with a unique opportunity to put their learning into practice in a working environment before graduating. Additional internship opportunities exist for graduates of the journalism courses with Independent News and Media’s international titles”. The Course Director for the BA (Hons) and MA in Journalism, Janice Gaffey, added

“Our BA and MA in Journalism are highly focused on practical skills training, and these internships are the perfect complement to the students’ learning experience. Graduates will leave the programmes prepared for work in the real world”.

Both the BA and MA degrees in Journalism are career focused, professionally oriented programmes that prepare students to work in print, broadcast, on-line and international journalism. Students interested in applying should contact the admissions office in Independent Colleges on 01 672 5058, or visit www.independentcolleges.ie for an online application and further information.
