I cannot find employment and just wondering where could I go from here?

Hi, I have recently completed a post grad dip in career guidance and have a B.A. in english and geography, however, I cannot find employment and just wondering where could I go from here?

Thank you for your email and very well done on gaining your BA and Post Grad, I assume you want to teach?

If that is the case have you considered doing a teaching qualification? This is needed for permanent teaching roles in schools, the VEC system may not require that qualification.

What types of jobs have you been looking at?

Hi Caragh,

Yeah, hoping to be a career guidance counsellor in a secondary school. Have applied mostly for these positions but no luck so far. I have also applied for adult guidance jobs but to no avail, lack of experience my downfall.

Have looked for voluntary work to gain experience but unsuccessful there as well. I think I will apply for a teaching qualification, hard to know what to do.

Hi Marie,

It seems that many guidance counsellors are teaching alongside, it is a traditional route to guidance counselling in schools.

Join the IGC and network with other counsellors - there are branches all over the country. Do keep volunteering your services also as it will help when you do get to interviews.
